Travel thirst vs Stirling strength

Following Brexit our beloved pound took a sharp dive against pretty much all foreign currency.  This was terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE news for the British travelling community.  However, since June 2016 the marketplace has experienced a few anomalies where the pound has been caused to strengthen.

Right now, the strength of the pound is up against the following countries:

  • Argentina
  • Chile
  • Ukraine
  • Turkey
  • Egypt
  • Vietnam
  • Laos
  • Japan

That being said, your money is likely to stretch a lot further in some countries than others because of the lower daily living costs.  For example, the pound may not be as strong in Europe as it is in Japan but you will generally get more for your cash.

Countries ordinarily cheaper to visit which accept the US dollar as well as their native currency, such as Vietnam and Costa Rica are worth considering twice due to the low value of the pound against the dollar inevitably having an impact on the overall cost of your trip.

Due to continued Brexit related uncertainties, the power of the pound will continue to fluctuate both up and down so it’s worthwhile keeping an eye on the currency rates and doing some research before you book your next trip.

The most important thing is to not let the poor exchange rates put you off!  With a bit of planning, you can still travel within your budget.  Don’t stop the adventure – there are too many fascinating places waiting to be explored!
